Resolution Re-Do

Happy New Year!

The ball has dropped, the holiday decorations are slowly being put away, and here we are with a fresh start in a new year. I love the idea of a new beginning that comes with the New Year, however I think our expectations of creating year-long resolutions are a little unrealistic, and could have us feeling guilty and shameful for not keeping the promises we made early in the year when we were high with yuletide cheer.

Instead of making a resolution that will likely be pushed aside by the month of April (or sooner if you are anything like me), I suggest we redefine resolutions and make them just for the month of January. That way, there is no guilt by mid-May when you haven’t hit the gym every day like you promised yourself you would, or you’ve given in and had dessert 3 times this week.

This year, try to make a resolution just for the month of January. Make real goals with a real timeline and give yourself a real shot at sticking with it. Maybe it’s going for a walk three times a week, reading that book you’ve put off, or maybe it’s having a game night once a week with your family. When you break down that last one, it’s only four evenings to set aside. Four nights out of the entire month to coordinate schedules, slow down and enjoy your family.

It’s probably likely that if you stick with something for the entire month of January, you are already on your way of making it a habit that will last longer than one month, but if you don’t, you won’t be feeling guilty about it by February. We need to be nicer to ourselves and give ourselves a break when things don’t always work out, even with the best of intentions. Life can get in the way and things can happen. Let’s agree to just move forward.

I also love the idea of making 3 resolutions, one for yourself, one for your family, and one for your community. It would be lots of fun to brainstorm with your family and listen to their ideas of how to be both better people and a better family in 2014.

Maybe you mix it up even more and make monthly resolutions. Maybe January is game night, February is try to make one new meal a week, March is call your mom every Sunday night….etc.  Here is a great printable template that every member of your family can fill out each month and place on the fridge. That way they will have a visual reminder of both their goals and the goals of their family members.

Ask for a family volunteer to be in charge of resolutions. This will give your children a sense of responsibility and importance within your family. If you have multiple children, have them switch off. They can be in charge of printing out the template, getting it to each family member and maybe even be responsible for holding a family meeting to share all of the resolutions.

The most important thing is that you share your resolutions, however big or small, with your family and decide how you all can support one another’s resolutions. Maybe your kiddos do the dishes once a week and you can use that time to read a book, or write or paint, or play the piano, or do whatever makes you happy. Because when you feel supported, and you get an opportunity to do something that feeds your soul, you will be in such a better place to be a better parent, child and friend.

Below are some ideas for family resolutions to help you get motivated:

  • Husband and wife date night 4 times in the month
  • Try something new as a family (Go to a farm/firehouse/etc)
  • Build a new reading nook – tepee, old crib mattress, etc.
  • Go tech free for one night a week
  • Do one messy science experiment every Saturday
  • Put on a play or a puppet show with your children
  • Take music lessons – have each member of the family pick an instrument that intrigues them
  • Bake treats for neighbors once a week
